Today social media remind us that day of 5 years ago -already- Carlotta delivered the honorary citizenship to the famous American wine critic James Suckling. As the former senior editor and European bureau chief for Wine Spectator and with its own magazine, Suckling always critically and spontaneously supported Brunello and its producers.
For that event, Carlotta was commissioned by the municipality to produce a sculpture symbolizing the city of Montalcino. Honored to be chosen, she represented its own beloved town like a woman. She drew on the white dress an image of Montalcino “stolen” (with his authorization 😊) from her artist friend Roberto Turchi. They share a deep love for the Siena masters of the 1300s, to whom this artwork paid a tribute.
The meaning of the work is multiple; the key is the most classic symbol of the gift of citizenship and hospitality.
Then the gaze, upwards, serene, proud but also attentive to the future and to the world.
And finally the crown, curly and made of wire and tendrils as a reference to the vine and wine, the link between Montalcino and the new fellow citizen James Suckling. A beautiful ceremony attended by many producers including Massimo Ferragamo (Castiglione del Bosco, Montalcino) and Angelo Gaja (Gaja, Barbaresco and Ca’ Marcanda, Bolgheri). among the guests in the audience there were also Oscar Farinetti (Eataly) and the engineer Pasquale Forte (Eldor Corporation SPA and Podere Forte, Castiglione d’Orcia) who attended the extraordinary municipal council held exceptionally inside the Teatro degli Astrusi.
